Media as Facilitator

If you've ever wondered about the role of the media in American political life, here's a memo that lays it out very clearly:

NBC's David Gregory is telling the Republicans that they can use his "news" show to propagandize, i.e. "frame the issues" as they please. No tough questions, no independent press, just a "facilitator" service that will help the Republicans get the message they want to "sell" across to the American people.

The United States Constitution considered the press to be sufficiently important that it mentions them in the first amendment and reserves special rights for them. NBC thinks "the media" is simply a service to allow political parties to "sell" a point of view. NBC obviously doesn't provide news. It provides "entertainment" dressed up as "news". That doesn't deserve first amendment protection. NBC needs to remove "news" from anything it does.
