Energy Production & Consumption in the US

Here's an interesting graphic from the Lawrence Livermore National Lab:

Notice how tiny, tiny, tiny is the contribution from wind, solar, and geothermal. For all that breast beating about "renewable" energy, it is almost invisible.

When I look at the graphic, the one thing that jumps out at me is the block titled "Rejected Energy". This is waste. It is a rich field to invest in to reduce and make current energy more useful. Big rewards. So why all the hullabaloo over wind, solar, and geothermal when there is this rich field to mine?
